There are three holidays that I personally enjoy: the Lunar New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and Halloween. So, today, 22 September 2010, the 15th lunar day of the 8th lunar month is the Mid-Autumn Festival, or the Moon Cake Festival as it is known. Today is the day that the Jade Rabbit makes a very special elixir.
Actually, owing to the manner in which calendars are calculated, the holiday will be celebrated tomorrow, 23 September 2010, which is the Autumn Equinox -- and, as it also happens, the birthday of my very best friend. By the way, this is not the so-called Chrysanthemum Moon, as that is the full moon of the 9th lunar month.
In Asia, you can have moon cakes delivered to your friends, the way we have flowers delivered in the United States. The very best ones are filled with chestnut paste and whole chestnuts.
Even though it is my wish to send moon cakes to each and every reader of Digital Tibetan Buddhist Altar, it is not possible. Instead, I am sending many prayers for your happiness and abundance of good fortune.
