The Heart

Mano-pubbaṅgamā dhammā
Mano-seṭṭhā mano-mayā,
Phenomena are preceded by the heart,
Ruled by the heart,
Made of the heart.
Manasā ce paduṭṭhena
Bhāsati vā karoti vā,
Tato naṃ dukkham-anveti
Cakkaṃ va vahato padaṃ.
If one speaks or acts with a corrupted heart,
Suffering follows one,
As the wheel of the cart,
the foot of the ox that draws it.
Mano-pubbaṅgamā dhammā
Mano-seṭṭhā mano-mayā,
Phenomena are preceded by the heart,
Ruled by the heart,
Made of the heart.
Manasā ce pasannena
Bhāsati vā karoti vā,
Tato naṃ sukham-anveti
Chāyā va anapāyinīti.
If one speaks or acts with a bright heart,
Happiness follows one,
Like a shadow that never leaves.
