If she has Asia street creds, they're a well-kept secret. The former president and chief operating officer of ACCION, Maria Otero, now Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs, has been named Department of State's new special coordinator for Tibet. If memory serves, that is a Congressionally-mandated position, and it is usually tossed to Global Affairs. Paula Dobriansky handled it for the Bush Administration.
ACCION is a microfinance, microlending operation top-heavy with Democratic Party political operatives.
Born and raised in Bolivia, Ms. Otero holds an M.A. in literature from the University of Maryland, an M.A. in international relations from Johns Hopkins’ Nitze School for Advanced International Studies (SAIS), in Washington, D.C, and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Dartmouth College. Since 1997, she has also served as an adjunct professor at SAIS. She is the highest ranking Hispanic at State, and the first Latina Undersecretary in history.
I suppose we should give her the Oscar for the wonderful film she might make? I'm sorry, but this is only going to work for me if they appoint an Asian studies expert to handle the Latin American portfolio.
