Bob Stupak (1942-2009)

An unusual friend of mine passed away quite recently, in Las Vegas. His name is quite well known among a certain set, but I doubt that anyone who reads this blog will know of him. Because it is a little difficult to explain him, lets just say he was an impresario and leave it at that.

The things I liked most about Bob were his sense of humor, his courage, and the kindness he tried so hard to conceal. I still remember a night spent at Fellini's, out on Charleston, on a double date with him and Phyllis McGuire. For some reason, we started discussing karma, and Bob came up with so many bizarre illustrations of how karma operates -- bizarre but absolutely accurate -- that none of us could stop laughing in wonderment at the depth of his understanding. Bob was also great friends with the late actor Pat Morita -- the two of them came to a little wedding party I had once, and spent the evening keeping all of us most amused.

Bob lived much of his life in Las Vegas, which he personified. He made an indelible mark on the town. He was, is, and always will be part of the strange legend of that strangest of all places.
